International Equine Artist Exhibition

I joined a great Group of artists a few weeks ago, the 'International Equine Artists'.
I was excited to see that there was an online exhibition just about to close entries!
It is the 'Autumn Colors of Equus' and I had just the piece! A commission from a while back, this 34 inch x 24 inch graphite and watercolour entitled 'Autumn Glow' was perfect, (or so I hope)... here's a link to the Group:

The beauty of creating art in miniature always thrills me especially after working on a large format Commission.. after many hours immersed in the patterns of the amazing Paint Horse "Our Incredible Story" (portrait pic coming soon..) I am back at the magnifying glass for a while!
I painted this magical secret cove after once again being moved to tears by the tragedy of the Dolphins when their trusting nature allows them to swim too close to Taiji, Japan.. I urge everyone to go to "The Oceanic Preservation Society" today!

This is one of my favourite poses in the horses'(or Unicorns') repertoire, this powerful view from the muscular hindquarters through to his focused eyes.. What better subject for my new exploration of shades of coloured pencil. Being so in love with pencil as a media, (but using mainly graphite), I have often used a little CP here and there in mixed media works. I am in awe of artists who create totally breathtaking CP drawings which can rival an oil painting in complexity and harmony....I will keep at it!

This is my second painting of the extremely rare Giraffe~Patterned Unicorns. Found only on one Island in the Realms of Unicorn, these stunning animals are closely bonded to their herd lifelong. They love the Lakes District and can often be found cooling their heels in the shallows. Here a mare stands patiently while her young foal experiences the Lakes' healing waters for the first time.

Reflecting on the early days of my attempts at becoming a professional Equine Artist, I remembered my love of drawing beautiful horses with the freedom of not having to conform to anyone's vision but my own (inner) one. That was in 2003. This past 7 years I have completed many commissions, miniatures, different subjects and styles have flown across my desk(s). I have loved every minute of it. But in working on this 18" x 24" drawing of a Friesian stallion, I'm revisiting that thrill of freedom in the work.:-)

Imp the Pony Makes The Stars The 'butterfly effect' reminds us that we are all connected, that the gently flapping wings of a butterfly in brazil can result in a tornado.. (or willy~willy) .. in ..well.. Australia! So here is a new little painting from me, a tiny artistic mirror reflecting some of my thoughts out into the Universe and back again to me. My long distance friend Elaine who runs a wonderful Animal Rescue Farm 'Hector's Gate' in the UK gave me permission to use a photo of her cheeky little pinto 'Imp' in my art.. I envisioned him having his own Butterfly Effect on the Universe! Splashing the crystal waters in the Cave at the edge of the World, sparkling droplets spiralling up into the skies, hanging there suspended as silver, twinkling stars. From my vantage point Down~under, I can hear the 'plink' and feel the silvery Shimmer!

Fifteen amazing little living examples of constant change are living out the start of their lives on my Studio desk! I rescued these Peron's Tree Frog tadpoles from a small pool of water in a friend's garden about 2 months ago. The days were still very warm, and not long after I set the taddies up in two aquariums at home, the pool was a green warm soup with no sign of life other than algae. So watching them change and grow legs is so rewarding, knowing that there will be a few more precious frogs on the Earth because I helped them!

I often begin a miniature whimsical painting with just a feeling. Connectedness to all 'things' is the undertow that powers my art so here it is again. Then I open my heart for a subject, and here is little Bonnie again, this time suddenly cavorting with dragonflies at the temple of the rare and wonderful Night Waratah on the Island of Pink and Gold Hearts! Makes sense? Not to a hard~nosed realist perhaps, ("How did Bonnie sail the boat? No motor, no sails".. "she has no hands anyway," and "she's 'just a dog'" "Waratahs grow in East Coast Australian scrubby Bushland not alone on an Island!!") .. but to the artistic heart, the image and the feeling floats gently from me to you across the ethers, before hopefully finding a welcome 'soft place to fall'.

'Firm Foundations' Graphite 16" x 20"

I live in one of the earliest settlements in Australia, the Hawkesbury River region. Governor Lachlan Macquarie was Sydney's first Governor, ordering and supervising the creation of buildings such as the first Barracks stables which still stands as the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. The Hawkesbury Regional Gallery's current Exhibition commemorates his BiCentennary.
For the past three months every spare minute (few though they seem to be!) has been spent actually IN this drawing! I feel as though I have been wandering the stables behind the Domain, hearing the shouts of men as they saddle their horses before riding the dirt roads of Sydney town 1810, and seeing the horrific conditions the early convicts who built this city had to endure. I know the heat and dust and flies.. I smell the incredible sea salt air of Sydney Harbour on a Spring day and hear those sea birds wheel and soar high in our beautiful cerulean sky.. Those horses who were shipped across the ocean to live here (months spent sailing away from the cool green of England) surely deserve a memorial to their struggle to adapt to this land, to temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius (100F).
I drew an Arabian mare as tribute to the Endurance horses who now bring fame to the Sydney through to Hunter region, with the lower Blue Mountains being some of the best Endurance country in the World!

I love painting curtains, and lace.. The ephemeral "almost there' quality of the sheer fabric reminds me of the nature of so much we experience here. Sometimes what we have to go through is tough, hard to accept and painful. And the lovely, the delicate whisper~quiet moments can seem to disappear. But perhaps they are there all the time, asking to be noticed, if we will simply say 'yes' to them. We need only lift the veil, and there is beauty.

Our poodle x chihuahua Bonnie is the inspiration for this painting.

"Daisy Days" ~ An Expression of Personal Power.

The horse is a powerhouse of perfect balance. He contains huge reservoirs of high voltage energy, which idles gently beneath his glistening chrome~sheen coat. His expression of that energy, his release of it, can be so fine tuned as to carry daisy chains gently afloat in his dancing mane, whilst rippling muscle and taut sinew coil in a dance of their own.
As always the gift animals offer to us is to see ourselves reflected in their eyes.
If I can strive to express my own personal power in such a balanced way as this, without aggression or arrogance, with rhythm and grace and just enough boldness, then I have honoured the horse and learned his lesson. And I thank him.

The Lacemakers, Watercolour

In November / December, I showed steps in the creation of 'The Lacemakers'. I began the piece as a learning process, (rather than with the intention of selling)~ combining transparent watercolours over the graphite drawing. I have had mixed feelings about the results, thinking I am losing some of the delicacy of the graphite, while knowing (with the coaching of a dear friend and amazing artist) that colour has it's own magic! But as with all learning curves, they take on their own life, carrying us forward on journeys which are their own Reward! "THE LACEMAKERS" almost "finished":

When I paint without a vision of where I'm headed, when I allow colour and water and feeling to carry me into the creation process that just "is", then paintings such as this one are born.

Surrounded by the haunting, meditational light of the knowing Moon, she steps the glowing waters in confidence and faith. Eyes are open, every muscle relaxed, no fear exists in her steps on the uncharted path.
When fear, hesitation, uncertainty hold us back from being strong and moving forward, just one trusting step at a time, with heart wide open, is all that is needed.

From a reference photo of a beautiful, but tightly restricted Andalusian, I began the careful work towards a faithful rendition, right down to the Spanish bit and foaming mouth, the flattened ears and the wild eyes. But as I worked, my thoughts turned to feelings of desire for freedom, for the toss of the wild windswept mane and the release of those hands from the reins. The American Paint Horse carries the blood of the Andalusian.

His ear on the far side has started to flick forward, the eyes softens as if to begin a dialogue.. the rein flies free into the air!

This tiny baby seal represents to me the inner child, whose gift to us is insight, the ability to see beneath the surface of things.. to receive air without taking a breath..

Another little image is surfacing from the ethers! Being blessed with the company of horses and dogs in my life I'm sure is like walking with Angels made visible. When the unseen world, the realm of feeling and spirit, seems abstract and difficult to understand, 'snapshots' appear in my consciousness like photos materialising in a darkroom tray..

Our little poodle x chihuahua, Bonnie, is in her 'wise years' yet she plays like a puppy. Races around the lawn with four year old Jess~Princess~Papillon. She looks at me with her amazing dark eyes, reminding me of love absolute and unconditional. Her heart is young. I am drawing her on a fun jaunt with a young at heart colt, bareback as I used to ride when I was less conscious of my mortality.

So many times in my day to day life, I 'forget to remember' that we are Spiritual beings having an Earthly experience. Just by opening the book 'Women Who Run with the Wolves,' I am inspired again to respect my creativity, our creativity as people. 'Sealskin, Soulskin' is one of the teaching stories in that book. It's focus is on returning again and again to our true nature, as the seal woman crosses between the worlds of 'inner' and 'outer', swimming to the Deep to retrieve her true self.

This pastel and gouache painting measuring 5.5" x 5.5", and backed onto a decorative 8" x 12"

embellished paper is inspired by this story.

Sealwoman looks away toward human settlement, inspired by the lights twinkling there, knowing that if she crosses the water to spend time away from her watery home, she will gain experience as well as lose some of her intuitions and finer senses. Her seal soulmate remains faithful, ready to help her cross back at any time.

Collaboration in a labour of love, these beautiful beings encircle a sacred space, weave their magic into lace.

Above is the art as it is today, on it's way to being 'finished'.. if any artwork ever is! Every viewer recreates the vision, weaves it in through their senses just as these magical lacemakers weave their etheric connection. I wanted to share some of the evolution of 'The Lacemakers' here, with the belief that we are all co~creators of our interwoven lives.

Graphite Study "Egypt" Features in Egyptian Horse Times!

Earlier this year I was given the opportunity to create a special piece of art for Egypt's official Equestrian Magazine 'Horse Times.' As I type this, the original drawing, measuring 55cm x 65 cm, is in the air en route to Cairo! The image was given a full page in the Spring Edition, alongside my idol Monty Roberts and Olympic Equestrian athletes.

The oceans are a Universe apart,
spun iridescent blue ~
threads torn from sun and from rainbow
from cloud and sunrise hue.

Woven strong,and carried into view
by dolphin lullaby and dance
and island's treasure too~

sway us gently
make us new.

I have tried to express the truth of the connection and relationship between Mother Ocean and the sky: it's cloud and rainbow blessings, which are not always soft and gentle, but are sometimes 'torn from the heavens' and here spun into liquid blue.

Another Papillon painting for me on auction today on ebay, 'Reflections' is an aceo, 6.5cm x 9cm.. layers of pencil and gouache on pastel paper. The papillon, a 'butterfly dog', holding court with the transformational Dragonflies and Butterfly. To his left, a Red Robin swoops straight toward the Heart Chakra with a leaf, reminiscent of the post Flood olive branch. Stars float suspended in the night ocean. Full moon rises on the high seas. I love to incorporate beautiful thoughts and intuitions into my art, and as I worked on this one, here is what arose:

I often watch our girls, Bonnie and Jess, involved quietly in their own thoughts.
They are surrounded by peace
They seem to be listening to music I cannot hear, dreaming of voyages I can only hope include me..
Art is so powerful, expressing in one moment what may otherwise take hours to explain, different languages, misunderstandings!

Spirals recur in my paintings and drawings, as it seems to me this is how time "is".. why do I feel no different in the essence of me, than when I was 20, or 23, or 25, the ages of my children now.. To think of my life as a journey along a straight line is depressing at worst, and just simply doesn't make sense at best. On an energy spiral, I envision we can step across to an earlier part of the life~line, in dream, memory, imagination, discussion, truth. In any case, it's a fun way of drawing! These are some spirals and reflections on our journeys, most recent in my miniature art.

Oceans remind me of the unbounded energy, the vast size, the power of our planet. I have always been a water~baby, Mum told me I would run to the shore as soon as I could walk! The smooth, even finish made possible using Acrylic paints, was realised last year when I joined the Studio Class of my friend, amazing artist Elena Parashko. This painting of Cook Island, off Fingal Head in Northern New South Wales, is one of my first efforts. Above right, at 100cm x 60cms, it took many hours, and this week I have had a go at re~ creating the island, this time at 10cm x 15cm and with Windspinner Dolphin leading me in.. I chose watercolour for this miniature.
